Crossing a large area (such as a desert) can represent making progress through a phase or process.
An illegal or unpermitted crossing (such as a property line or international border) can represent a feeling or fear of doing something wrong, “crossing a line,” or getting caught.

(2) Crossing the sea, going from one country to another, may symbolize a fundamental personal re-orientation; perhaps leaving conventional values behind in favour of values discovered within oneself.
