According to Freud, there is no original speech or sound in dreams; sounds are derived from what is actually spoken or heard in waking life. Jungians, however, think that the sensation of hearing in dreams is a symbolic representation of an issue troubling you in your life. This is because sounds in dreams have a similar impact on us as they do in waking life. They carry information and can give rise to pleasure, fear, anger and so on, depending on the sound. Therefore if a sound features clearly in your dream, the important thing is first of all to define your feeling reaction to that sound. Ask yourself if the sound is a warning or whether it carries information? Is it a positive sign or does it make you feel anxious?
Sounds can sometimes have great power in dreams and if they cause something to happen, they suggest a use of positive will, a positive and confident expression of your desires that encourages results. Bear in mind, too, that sometimes your dream incorporates sounds such as an alarm clock or the traffic outside your bedroom, weaving them into the dream’s symbolism.
